TIDAL BY TRENT JANSEN FOR TAIT

The Tidal collection captures the simplicity, innocence and style of Australian summers in the 1970s; conjuring blissful memories of endless summers spent by the beach and the pool. The smell of sunscreen and sausages sizzling on the barbecue, the grit of sand between the toes, salt on the lips, and the soporific warmth of hours spent in the sun.

Together with designer Trent Jansen, Tait has crafted a collection of outdoor furniture that conjures the nostalgia of Australian summer living in the 1970s. In conceiving the collection, Trent explores the myths and memories of summer and surf, rediscovering his love of the ocean and curiosity for Australia’s die-hard surf culture.

Hours spent down at his local surf shop, sharing coffees with mates and trading jokes with Harry, the local surf shop owner, helped Trent peel back the myths surrounding the legendary Aussie surfer. Unpacking this lunch box of local surf culture Trent discovered a hidden stash of salty, jargony treats: “fat wave”, “big wedgy” “left hander”, “right hander”; passed down from the 1960s and 1970s, as a whole dialect of plain, raw references that revealed every surfer’s obsession with the water and the waves.

A passionate researcher, Trent applied a scientific eye to Australia’s surf culture, studying the secrets of wave formations. He admired the beautiful linear diagrams that illustrated the different stages of waves as they gather force, roll, crest and fall in a sudsy froth of sand and surf.

“Surf culture is a quintessential aspect of the Australian lifestyle. The beach draws memories of summer holidays and the freedom of days spent by the ocean, discovering rips and the relentless cycle of the tide. These lessons from childhood to adulthood shape our intuition to forge a resolute respect for the beauty and treachery of the ocean,” says Trent Jansen.

The Tidal Chair and Lounger capture the curling, rounded flow of rolling waves. Bringing that 1970s flavour in, Trent has applied a stylised edginess – straight lines and tight radii – to the chair’s juicy curves.

Stainless steel wire in power coat finish speaks to the linear language of those wave diagrams. A seamless fluidity emerges as the doubled up legs rise and diverge, circling up around the back of the chair before coming back down again. In a poetic twist, Trent captures the swell of flowing water in a series of tidal marks that ripple up the seat base before breaking up and around the side of the chair.

Emulating the long, smooth pull of the building wave is the Tidal Sunlounge. Like a cool drink of water, the Tidal Sunlounge is all laidback calm; a long, leisurely lead up to what is sure to end as a sip of the drink.

For the collection’s range of coffee and dining tables, Trent studied the mysterious gravitational pull and spiralling energy of water spouts. A series of twisting, curling components interconnect to create a whirlpool of stainless steel wire that flows from the feet up into the table base – a circulating stream that is both decorative and structural.

The calm, quiet lapping of water returns at the table base; a beautiful exposed feature set beneath smoky glass, or a lovely hidden detail contained beneath a light, delicate layer of porcelain. There’s a perfect balance found in the use of tactile porcelain – an elemental strength and natural delicacy.

“The brief for Tidal was to create a range that reflected the relaxed modern Australian lifestyle while also responded to a gap in the marketplace for Australian-made outdoor furniture with the highest level of craftsmanship, engineered for a coastal or poolside setting,” says Tait Managing Director Gordon Tait.

The collection speaks to our modern Australia lifestyle. Its stylish lines and stainless steel wire construction allows it to seamlessly work into the vernacular of both indoor and outdoor environments. The Chair, Lounger and Tables can be selectively chosen for numerous applications across home, work, hospitality, multi-residential, hotel settings and more, while the recently added Tidal Sunlounge is one further part of the jigsaw to complete this luxury offering.
