Greta M. Grossman’s iconic Cobra Table Lamp is back in the spotlight at MoMA’s The Value of Good Design exhibition.

The Cobra Lamp was Greta M. Grossman’s most recognised design. Originally designed in 1950, the lamp takes its name from the oval shade which is reminiscent of a Cobra snakes head. A ground-breaking design of the time, the Cobra Tale Lamp won the Good Design Award and was exhibited at MoMA’s Good Design Show in 1950.

Almost 70 years later, The Cobra Table Lamp returns to MoMA in New York for their The Value of Good Design exhibition in 2019. The exhibition features significant designs from the 1950’s ranging from objects, ceramics, appliances, electronics, transport design and graphics.  The exhibition is a retrospective exploring MoMA’s initiatives from the 1930’s to the 1950’s which championed well-designed, affordable contemporary products but it also raises very important questions about the meaning of Good Design in the 21st century.

MoMA’s The Value of Good Design exhibition runs through until 15 June 2019.

Since 2011, Danish design house, Gubi, has revived many of the great designs by Greta M. Grossman. The Cobra Lamp was one of the first to be brought back to life in the modern day.

“It’s so fantastic to know this iconic lamp is going to be back in the spotlight, as it was a part of the original Good Design exhibition back in 1950.” – Jacob Gubi, Founder

“The fact is that she is relatively unknown makes the process for GUBI more interesting, as we have an honest opportunity to continue to convey Greta M. Grossman’s designs. I am very happy that we can give this magnificent female designer a second comeback.”  – Jacob Gubi, Founder
