Charles Wilson

Born in rural Australia in 1968, Charles Wilson graduated from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design in 1990. Upon graduation he co-founded the Argo collective to develop experimental furniture and decorative objects for manufacture. In 1993, Charles created his first successful production design, the SW1 Swivel chair for Norman + Quaine, which was acquired by Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum of Applied Arts & Science in 1996. The chair initiated an ongoing working relationship between Wilson and Sydney-based manufacturer Woodmark International, for whom he has since created a range of furniture pieces for local and international distribution. Boulder, Heron, CP1 and the 801 Sofa’s are all marked by a clarity of vision and formal simplicity.

Wilson has won a number of design awards, including The Australian Design Award for the Advent candelabra and The 2022 Inde Design award for the Zephyr Lounge. Recent commissions include the design of a blackwood tallboy for the Broached Commissions and a swivel chair for Herman Miller. The Broached tallboy was exhibited at Design Days, Dubai in 2012 and was cited by Wallpaper* magazine as “one of the most sophisticated pieces in the fair”. In 2013 Wilson’s Serif stools were exhibited at the Temporary Museum of New Design at the Salon del Mobile, Milan and were subsequently shown at 100% Design, London.
