Mathieu Mategot

Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) was a Hungarian-born French furniture designer and tapestry artist. He studied at the School of Arts and Architecture in Budapest, eventually moving to France where he became a naturalized citizen after serving in the French Army during World War II.

Best known for his refined handcrafted furniture using metal, rattan, glass, and formica, his most famous piece is likely the iconic Nagasaki chair. Today, his work is found in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the National Library of Australia in Canberra, where one of his tapestries hangs on permanent display.
