CondeHouse’s Kotan Chair was carefully selected for its timeless look and enduring appeal. The name “Kotan”, derived from the Ainu word for “settlement” or “village”, reflects architect Matthew Crawford’s philosophy that heritage should be adapted, not altered. This harmonious blend of tradition and innovation made the Kotan Chair an obvious choice for the heritage-listed building.
“We chose the Kotan chair for its timeless look and feel. Warders’ cottages feature details from 1850 with new contemporary insertions, so it was important that the furniture selected spoke to simple aesthetic, practical, humble look, reimagining of an armchair in Japanese contemporary aesthetics.”
